Living below the Breadloaf Wilderness is to experience the throws of the winter.

Forty eight hours ago at the elevation of the Outdoor Center we were solidly in a belt of rain – for two days in fact.  Combined with the deep frost (Frost) lines from a January like December that created ice like I haven’t seen in my lifetime.

Throughout Thursday night the temperatures dropped almost straight into the single digits, and snow was pinched from the wet air.  The free water took an even split – half making more ice (amazing base) and half draining into the earth.

Throughout yesterday we rolled almost the entire trail system and found, especially at the higher elevations, beautiful flat corridors.  The ice was still persistent in places, but in stark contrast to what the webcam or a driveby on 125 yielded, there is amazing skiing right now.

The groomers have been rolling all morning on natural terrain and new snowmobile groomed tracks will start to appear.  It’s magic for intermediate and advanced skiers, snowshoers and fat bikers.

If you’ve been reading along you likely still have questions about Brandy flakes..  Thursday night was a banner night for snowmaking – with a miniature replica of Breadloaf Mountain blown in the stadium along with Red Bull worthy piles up 1st loop!

A deep till on the machine made loops has yielded perfect corduroy for the first time since the thaws.  Come ski it to believe it.

Shop is open until 4:30 with snacks, soup, retail and rental at your fingertips.

Of note we have a beautiful race on Monday for Vermont High School’s apply named, The Crumb.  But more on that later come up or get out there and see the wilderness by ski, snowshoe or fatbike!
